For those who want to experience a different Mexican summer vacation, the best place to visit is Veracruz which has been famous with its annual carnival celebration held every February. Veracruz is a city located in the heart of Mexico that has a strong Cuban influence which is demonstrated in its music and dance. So for those who want to experience an unconventional Mexican summer vacation, this place is the perfect one to visit.
Probably the best time to visit is around the month of February when people hold their annual carnival celebration that the city turns into a festive place where people are dancing with their heart’s content.
Just like most cities in the country, Veracruz’s architecture maintains some of its colonial buildings and fortress. There are also several museums in the place that have interesting architectural design.
Despite its quaint beauty, its beaches in the north have not been maintained clean so water-sports activities are out of the question. However, tourists can go south and visit the beaches of Los Tuxtlas or go north to Tecolutla beaches.
Places to visit in Veracruz
San Juan de Ulua Castle
This is the last fortress of the Spaniards which was later used as prison during the later years and has been known to be the dungeon where the worst practices of torture in the country had happened.
Located near the wharves of downtown, the castle is easily accessible by tourists.
Museo Agustin Lara
This is where one of the most famous music writers in Mexico, Agustin Lara, has lived her life writing songs. Today, the place is turned into a museum open to the general public.
Boulevard
Probably the best place to have a relaxing promenade, the Boulevard has been famous with its romantic ambience and spacious grounds where people usually fly their kites or ride their bicycles.
Baluarte de Santiago
Since Veracruz used to be a colonial city during the Spanish era, there used to be a towering wall to protect the place from outside invaders. Today, after years of war and natural corrosion, some parts of the wall crumpled; however, the Baluarte de Santiago remained intact and has been preserved by the local government.
Downtown
For those tourists who want to see a Cuban-inspired music, they should go to downtown where they can see people dancing, carousing, and enjoying themselves with the beat of the sound.
